What does the Etch Studio split cost people who already paid?

A Bev is someone who thinks they understand how a modern web app works, then buys a locked canvas to prove they do not. Etch Studio is that purchase. Forty-nine dollars a month, the SurrealDB stays in their tenant, and the souvenir is a ZIP. If you bought it, you are the Bev.

What support said the split is

On September 22, 2026, in a community thread titled "Etch Studio Pricing Announcement," members asked what happens to early EtchWP customers. Support's answer was that Studio is not the WordPress plugin. It is a separate product, on a non-WordPress platform, with separate pricing. You can stay on EtchWP or also buy Studio.

“Currently Etch Studio is available for purchase for $49/month, which is the discounted rate for current Etch WP users.”

A member then asked whether lifetime holders get a further discount, or whether $49 is already the discount. Support answered:

“No, the current price listed is the discounted amount.”

The public checkout at studio.etchbuilder.io/purchase showed that same $49 a month when last reviewed on September 22, 2026. The page itself did not print a second, lower price for lifetime holders. On August 25, 2026, Kevin Geary had still said pricing was not final:

“We're not 100% on the pricing for Etch Studio yet. It's going to be insanely cost-effective.”

By September 22, support was quoting $49 as the live rate for current users. A member in that thread said Geary had already described a price lock on a livestream. This page does not have that sentence from him. It has support's number.

The rate is temporary

Support also said the special pricing will not last. Once it is removed, even someone from the initial EtchWP pre-sale cannot go back to it.

“Even if you were part of the initial Etch WP Pre-sale you won't be able to go back to that price once it's removed.”

Current customers do not have a permanent license to the new product. They have a window. Miss it, or cancel later, and even the pre-sale price is gone. The timeline puts the August 25 "not 100% on pricing" line next to this $49 rate. "Insanely cost-effective" was the pitch. A locked editor with no database export is what shipped.

$49 a month buys the editor, not the project

Other hosted builders often sit under $20 a month and return a Git repository. Studio, at the rate support named, returns compiled files. On the August 25 stream Geary showed the download:

“There's your zip file.”

“Their account owns the files … they have 100% ownership of that website.”

Those files are the published site. They are not the SurrealDB database, the loops, the logic, or a repository you can open anywhere. There is no JSON project file and no re-import. See Can you export your site from Etch Studio?. Stop paying and the editor stops. The ZIP does not save you.

Geary already has a name for people he thinks are too slow to follow him. On the August 25 stream he used one of them out loud.

“You're an NPC.”

Bev is the other name, and it fits the Studio customer better than it fits his critics. A Bev looks at a visual editor, a monthly bill, and a ZIP, and believes they are holding a web application. They are holding a rental. The database, the loops, and the logic stay in the vendor's app. Other builders often cost less than $20 a month and hand back a Git repository. Studio hands the Bev a folder and keeps the project. The hub is the same fact without the nickname: one canvas, two checkouts, and the new work landing in the one you do not own.
