What EtchWP backers were actually promised

This is the narrative spine of etchwpstudio.com. It is stronger if it is visibly fair about what backers did get before discussing what changed.

August 2024: the pitch

“The mission of Etch is intertwined with a larger mission of dramatically improving the WP ecosystem and experience.”

“We do it together, or we don't do it at all.”

The email named the same pre-sale process used for the vendor's earlier products and said Etch is no different because this is the winning process. Details would come in September; buyers and builder would decide together.

What buyers asked at the point of sale

On September 5, 2024, a public r/WordPress thread opened the night of the pre-sale. Commenters raised questions that look familiar in hindsight — attributed here only as substantive analytical comments, not as prophecy:

• On ecosystem lock-in: commenters raised concern that Etch would lock buyers into the vendor's own ecosystem.
• On the architecture: commenters noted that the UI writes into WordPress structures in ways that might eventually make WordPress optional.
• On precedent: commenters compared the pre-sale to the pattern some buyers had seen with Oxygen and BreakDance.

These points are paraphrased from commenters in a public r/WordPress thread on September 5, 2024. No commenter names appear here. No insults from that thread are reproduced. Pricing figures and revenue arithmetic from the thread are not cited as fact.

The defensible claim is not that skeptics were vindicated. It is that the obvious questions were raised publicly before the money changed hands.

What was promised for year one — and delivered

“Being good stewards of the pre-sale money that our amazing customer base gave us as an investment in our vision.”

“2,657 commits (~51 per week), over 40 full releases, nearly one release per week.”

Backers who expected basic brochure sites within a year received far more than that in shipping cadence. That credit is explicit. The Era 4 declaration on January 30, 2026 included:

“Our community deserves as much credit as our hard working team.”

“In the future, any WordPress user will be able to use anything built with Etch—even without an Etch license.”

“A Top Secret Exploratory Mission — We're working on something we're not ready to talk about yet. But when we are, it's going to change the model again.”

The LTD close

June 11, 2026: "LTDs are disappearing in July." July 1, 2026: official notice, deadline July 15. July 15: LTDs end. August 25: Studio revealed; LTD confirmed to exclude it.

This page reports that sequence. It does not claim the vendor sold lifetime deals while planning to exclude them from Studio. The sequence is the story.

Where that leaves backers

People who bought EtchWP lifetime or annual licenses funded a Svelte canvas that now has a second hosted checkout. Studio requires a separate subscription. New architecture ships to Studio first.
