Tailwind or BEM? If AI edits your site, pick Tailwind.
If you build and change your site by asking an AI, Tailwind works better: it is what most AI builders write by default, every change sits on the element it changes, and there are no class names to keep in sync. BEM is cleaner for people who edit the CSS by hand. Fluid sizing works the same in both.
Side by side
Six questions that decide how well an AI keeps your site clean as you ask for changes.
What AI writes without being askedBetter: Tailwind
TailwindThe styling most AI site builders reach for by default.
BEMOnly when you ask, and only as consistent as your rules.
Where a change happensBetter: Tailwind
TailwindOn the element you are changing. One line.
BEMIn the HTML and in a separate stylesheet, kept in sync.
Names to inventBetter: Tailwind
TailwindNone.
BEMEvery block, part and variant needs a name, used the same way everywhere.
Leftover CSSBetter: Tailwind
TailwindDelete a section and its styles go with it.
BEMOld rules stay until someone removes them.
Reading the HTMLBetter: BEM
TailwindLong lists of small classes.
BEMShort names that say what each part is.
Fluid text and spacingBetter: Same
Tailwindclamp() sizes defined once as theme variables.
BEMThe same clamp() sizes as CSS variables.
Why AI does better with Tailwind
Building a site is now mostly asking for changes in plain words, even for people who have never written code. That rewards the styling with the fewest moving parts.
It is what the models know best
Tailwind is the default in most AI site builders, so the first answer is usually right.
One change, one place
"Make the button bigger" edits one class on one element. Nothing else has to move with it.
Nothing to drift
No class names to invent and reuse. With BEM, a renamed class in the HTML and a stale one in the CSS is the most common break.
Smaller edits, fewer tokens
The AI rewrites the line it needs, not a section of HTML plus the matching rules in the stylesheet.
When BEM is still the right call
BEM is not wrong. It is built for people who read and edit stylesheets. If that is you, these are the cases where it wins:
People edit the CSS by hand
A team that opens the stylesheet every week reads .card__title faster than a line of utilities.
A class-based visual builder
Builders that style by class name work with named classes, and BEM carries straight over.
One design system, many sites
Change .card once and every card everywhere follows.
Choosing BEM with an AI? Give it strict rules: one block per section, a fixed naming pattern, and a tokens file. The BEM option in our prompt builder already writes those rules for you.
Fluid sizing works in both
Text and spacing that grow smoothly from phone to desktop come from clamp() sizes stored as CSS variables, not from the class style. Same value, two ways to use it:
:root {
--step-2: clamp(1.5rem, 1.2rem + 1.5vw, 2.5rem);
}
.hero__title { font-size: var(--step-2); }@theme {
--text-step-2: clamp(1.5rem, 1.2rem + 1.5vw, 2.5rem);
}

Is Tailwind or BEM better for AI-generated websites?
Tailwind, if the AI also makes your changes. It is what most AI builders write by default, each change sits on the element it changes, and there are no class names to keep in sync between the HTML and a stylesheet. BEM is the better pick only when people edit the CSS by hand.
Which one is more fluid?
Neither. Fluid text and spacing come from clamp() sizes stored as CSS variables. In plain CSS you write var(--step-2); in Tailwind v4 you put the same values in @theme and write text-step-2. The page scales the same way in both.
Does BEM make the AI slower or more expensive?
Usually a little. A BEM change touches two places, the HTML and the stylesheet, so the AI rewrites more and has more ways to get out of sync. A Tailwind change is one line on one element.
When should I still choose BEM?
When people will open the CSS and edit it by hand, when you build in a visual tool that styles by class name, or when one design system is shared across many sites. Give the AI strict naming rules if you do.
What does "Let the AI choose" pick in the workflows guide?
Whatever the tool prefers, which in most AI builders is Tailwind. You get the faster, safer default without having to ask for it.
